Portsea Hole

Site layout:
-Around 500m from Portsea Pier -Top of the hole starts around 12m. -The northern side is an
almost vertical wall dropping to 27m then tapers off in a sand bowl to 34m at the bottom
-Wall is made up of a number of small overhangs -Best diving 12-25m, beyond this only sand
Points of interest:
-Formed where there was a bend in the Yarra River, before sea levels rose around 10,000
years ago, forming Port Phillip Bay -On top of the hole are several rock bommie's around
which are found hundreds of fish species -Blue Devil fish, rosy wrasse, leather jackets
-Sponges, bryozoans, corals, anemones -A small wreck sits on the sand at 26m, about 50m
from the wall -One of the most popular dives in the bay

Water movement/currents: Dive at slack water
Hazards: Depth for inexperienced divers, current change, boat traffic.
